Saturday Spotlight: Introducing

It’s Saturday, which means it’s time to shine my spotlight. If you have been around for a bit you know that I love sharing the love. I have been blessed to meet (virtually) some super talented folks, insert Adella Colvin.

You guys ready to meet the super talent? Grab your beverage of choice and keep reading. P.S. make sure you read it all..there is a treat at the end. 🙂

The Story

I am so happy you agreed to be in my spotlight, tell me your yarn story.

It all began when my husband deployed to Afghanistan in 2012. I walked outside to check my mail and met, my next-door neighbor, Bonnie. We exchanged a few words and she asked if I was alright. I told her that I was, but she must have seen right through me. She invited me into her home for a cup of coffee. When I walked into her home I saw all types of beautiful little decorations, throws, and pillow cases. I asked her where I could find similar items, to which she replied that she had handmade them all. I had expressed to her my interest in making my own items. She gave me a hook, a book, and a ball of yarn. She also said that if I had any additional questions, or if I messed something up, to feel free to stop by and she’d help me out. The rest is history.

Well thank you Bonnie. You have crochet in the name of the business, do you knit too? Who taught you and how long has it been?

Well, I began crocheting in January 2012. Knitting came along a few months later, so I’d say around April 2012. Bonnie initially taught me how to crochet and then knit. She also helped me to “understand my stitches” and fix my errors. I picked up a lot of tips and tricks from various sources on the Internet, groups on Facebook, Craftsy, and YouTube (that’s really been my go-to).

Well it sounds like I need to shine my spotlight on Bonnie, lol How awesome is she!! How did the yarn dye business start?

When the closest local yarn store closed, The Sassy Knitter in Aiken, SC, and I couldn’t find what I wanted at the big box stores, I decided to start dyeing my own yarn. That was two years ago.

I love you go getter attitude. What is your best seller?

Steampunk. A mix of blues, purples, and black. I’ve dyed that colorway on just about every base and weight you can think of; silk, yak, merino, sparkle, lace to super bulky. On average, I see requests for that colorway at least two or three times a week.

What’s next for Crochet Cottage?

I am in the process of rebranding. I gave birth to my first child last year. Her name is Lola. I want to create something that I can pass down to her someday. So, next year will be the official launch of LolaBean Yarn Co. It is my hope that this launch will be the beginning of even greater things to come.

Good luck with the new brand I am so sure it will be a hit! Thanks for spending a few minutes with me. That baby, my goodness she is lovely!

  2. As a recipient of much of Adella’s yarns, you will be “hooked” on them. Her way of finding out what colors work together and then applying them is nothing short of genius. I am, and will forever be, a fan of this wonderful woman, her wonderful family and her creativeness. Thank you, Adella (and Gaye for featuring her) for being uber talented and lovely. <3
