The Secret to the Herringbone Stitch

This stitch is taking me through it. As you know I am currently working on the Secret Love Shawl with the new yarn from Wool and the Gang. The yarn is called Tina. I am using the Vitamin C color of course and I did a tutorial on this stitch. Well, I have spent some time with the stitch and I have a secret. You wanna know what the secret is?

The secret is this: PAY ATTENTION! LOL! I have never had to pull out, back up, or TINK back so much ever. This technique is teaching me that sometime I need to pay attention. I have 2 mistakes in it currently that I am going to live with because I can’t start again, I just can’t. My current state of mind has me drifting off to avoid reality, so I have decided when that happens, this projects stops.

I am in love with the material that herringbone generates, but lord knows I have to pay attention. There are a few patterns on Ravelry so let’s look at my favorites.

But first, LOL! Can we talk about this color? Can we drool for one minute? This Orange is simply fabulous!

That last pattern I have done and forgot all about it. Have you done this stitch? Do you agree that attention to the details is required? Let’s discuss in the comments.

  1. I haven’t done this stitch before, but like I commented on your tutorial, it looks really cool. It looks like it will make a really dense fabric (or give the illusion).

  2. Yes! Paying attention works! LOL When I got back into knitting in 2009 (after not knitting and not missing it for like, 30 years), I started with several pretty much no-brain patterns. Then for some unknown reason, the world of sock knitting lured me into its merciless clutches. At that point I had never heard of Ravelry (maybe it didn’t exist in 2010? Can’t remember.) and I had no idea there were hundreds of free knitting tutorials online. Did the cuff K2, p2 just fine. Did the leg stockinette stitch, no problem. Then came the heel flap. Well, that was easy, too, once I got into it. But THEN: that heel turn! OMG I could NOT make any sense out of that heel turn! It was crazy!! After several false starts, I decided just to follow the pattern, stitch by stitch, and see what happens. And it was magical! I had a heel turn! It just grew itself in my hands! LOL So of course I’m hooked on socks now. But I still have to concentrate devotedly on every stitch when I get to the heel turn. But that taught me what to do when confronted with a pattern that I can’t envision in my head before doing it. Follow the stitches AND PAY ATTENTION!
