What's on my mind

What’s on my mind Wednesday

Its Wednesday and I thought I would switch it up a bit. The WIP Wednesday post is still happening over on Facebook. If you want to share your current WIP head on over there.

Today I want to talk about something that has been on my mind since this wool walk. I have not had this situation since I was in Florida at the store that remains nameless. You guys know me and I will not point fingers or call names, I just want to discuss ok?

When I go to a yarn store, or any store for that matter, I have expectations. I am coming to potentially give you my money, that fact should inspire the best service ever, right? Ha!

It is 2017 and we still follow folks around a store? The reason for following has nothing to do with being helpful either and here is the deal; it’s HARD to be rude to me. I will smile and attempt to engage long before I get annoyed.

Yes I did all 14 stores and I would say the majority were extremely nice. I mean I would go back, nice. The other places, well, I wanted to remind them that THEY opted to participate in the walk. I wanted to remind them they were open to the public. I wanted to remind them they were in business to make money.

Wool and the Gang

Would I be wrong if I said don’t go to a particular shop? I think I would. How do we get across to these folks? When I participate in these walks I like to support EACH store, but what I refuse to do is reward rude behavior. So the less friendly places didn’t get my money and that makes me sad.

Do I look like I would steal? Do I look like I can’t knit? What about my appearance made you treat me like I smelled bad. I took a bath and put on my some smell good hahahahahaha but seriously. When your other customers had no problem speaking to me, what was your issue?

How do we let folks know their behavior needs work?

Knit on my fiber friends….knit on

  1. I ABSOLUTELY AGREE. I WILL NOT SPEND MY HARD EARNED MONEY IN ANY PLACE THAT DOES NOT TREAT ME WITH THE SAME RESPECT I SHOW THERE STORE. BY THE SAME TOKEN I FIND IT VERY EASY TO OVER SPEND IN PLACES THAT TREAT ME WITH RESPECT AND APPRECIATE MY BUSINESS. IN THOSE PLACES I RARELY EVEN LOOK AT THE PRICE. IF I WANT ITI GET IT

  2. I think the behavior needs voice at that time. Sometimes rude people don’t even realize their rude is showing and oozing all over the place. I don’t look bad you do.

    Just my two cents,

  3. I had that happen one time, i went back and when i stated i need to browse i do not need escort, but thanks anyway, something to that effect, the third time, no problem…it takes time, repetition, patience add nd help from the MOST HIGH to not lashout or be vengeful…go back…if it happens again, snap “i cannot concentrate if i feel like i am being followed. Are you following me?🤗🤗🤗”

  4. I dunno, maybe email the offenders the link to this article, without further comment? But if they’re stupid enough to discriminate against a category of customer, they’re probably not bright enough to get such a subtle nudge. I hate that this happened to you. You’re kind of lucky I wasn’t there because I sometimes let my mouth run ahead of my brain and there might’ve been scenes. I hope you have brushed this right out of your head and you’re now enjoying the yummy yarns you bought!

  5. See, you are way nice! I try to give people the benefit of the doubt in many, many situations, but not so much when it comes to my money—I don’t have much to spare, so businesses need to appreciate it. If I feel I am being singled out for some reason and other customers are not, then nope, no need to return. If it seems like they are rude to everyone equally …still bad, but they may get one more chance out of me. Businesses forget that there are way more tools for “word of mouth” these days. Social media platforms give people a lot of options to share reviews. I think you need to share your honest review on a platform such as Yelp or Google. You can do so anonymously, since you are being gracious enough not to put them on blast on your personal blog. I am a person who likes to read reviews; it doesn’t mean that I may not try a place to form my own opinion, but it does give me pause. If a business’ behavior towards me warrants an unfavorable review, then so be it.
On the positive side, since you are fortunate to have had many more pleasant experiences than unpleasant ones, promote the stores that respect you by showering them with praise (like you already do) and good reviews.

  6. I wasn’t able to participate this year, although I purchased the ‘passport ‘. I would be very upset if I got that treatment because a majority of the yarn shops were in the northern area of the state and I live 15 minutes outside of Philadelphia. So there was quite bit of distance to drive for that type of treatment. This is 2017 and if I travel to a yarn shop, you will know about it as soon as step foot in your place of business, so put on your smile for the sake of a sale. All money is green!

I found the same thing happened two years ago during the NJ walk. I just walked out of the store. I bought at all the other stores I went to also. I have not done another walk, because now I know what stores to go too.

  8. Is there someone who organized this walk? Perhaps a private message to them about your experience at the place in question would be helpful. Chances are you aren’t the only person who felt this way in the store, and others may not be as gracious as you are in not naming the store publicly. A message to the owner of the store may or may not help—especially when they find out you are a popular fibre blogger. Thank you for sharing your perspective.

  9. I’ve had this happened to me once. I thought I was in this lady’s way and moved over, but then became annoyed when I caught on to what was happening. I just left and never went back. I frequent a LYS near my house and asked if this was normal, but didn’t name names. The shop owner said, yes, due to shoplifters. It’s their way of making sure you don’t have sticky fingers. Now I know they don’t do this with all customers, so it does make me wonder if some LYS are choosing some customers that come in, like new ones? So, to the thieves that feel the need to swipe a skein of yarn or handmade hats in yarn shops, you’re making the rest of the nice folks look bad.
It does put a sour taste in my mouth when they become a stalker as you shop.

  10. I’ve had this issue in the yarn store nearest me. So I drive a little farther north and have made that shop my LYS. I used to travel extensively for work and always looked for the yarn store in the area. I have found that the following thing is real across the nation.
