Adventures in Fat Fibers and Felts| a review

a few posts ago I shared that I was blessed enough to receive a copy of Big Stitch Wearables, Adventures in Fat Fibers and Felts. A book that was edited and compiled by Becca Smith of The BagSmith. A book that includes 20 patterns by six designers; two of which I have made before..the Madyson Capelet and The Topper. What? You know I am a chunky lover..in this case size absolutely matters πŸ‘€ you know how I feel, knit big or go home.

Well not only did I get the book, but I got the kit to make the Chicago Poncho designed by Heather Dixon. The kit includes a skein of Apple Creek chunky yarn…which is super yummy AND a large felt pelt. This is easily a weekend project as all you need to knit are the sleeves.  If you have never worked with Felt pelts, then please give it a try. This is actually my second time using it, the first was from The BagSmith as well. Can you tell I am a big fan? πŸ˜‹ below is the fabulous Becca Smith wearing one of the felt wraps. I had the pleasure of wearing one while I was working the booth at Vogue Knitting live earlier this year. I’m tellin you give it a try. On the website they sell the felt pelts in full or half and they have the yarn that is died to match πŸ’πŸΎ

Ok on to the Chicago Poncho, as stated this is quick and satisfying. After I got on the right track πŸ˜’ can we talk about reading the pattern fully before starting? Yea, let’s! Because in my haste, because I had gone a few days without knitting and was very, very unhappy. Every time someone said what’s wrong, I looked at them just like this πŸ‘‡πŸΎπŸ‘‡πŸΎπŸ‘‡πŸΎπŸ‘‡πŸΎ

Didn’t they notice the absence of yarn? I mean other than when I am sleep, or showering and yea I don’t knit on the toilet 😜, the point is I am ALWAYS KNITTING. Anyway back to the project that I had to frog 🐸 because I was using the wrong size needle

Once I got my life together it was smooth sailing from there. The pattern is well written and easy to follow. When I got to the end and realized I had a decent amount of yarn left, I opted to make turtle neck (not included on the pattern) I love turtle necks. I just can not waste yarn. I am happy with the outcome and would absolutely do it again. It is more of a sweater than a poncho if you ask me, but since you didn’t, lol!

Here are some pics of the process and completed project.

The book is on Amazon and retails for $21.00, which is a great price for all the wonderful patterns. Here are a few of the patterns

Happy 4th of July!

  1. Hope you had a great holiday weekend. That is a great poncho, looks great on you too! I love felt. Have you done any nuno felting? I made a scarf using wool roving on top of a silk scarf. You wet the wool as you are making the scarf and it shrinks when dry. Neat concept.

I must say that I reaaly didn’t like chunky knits until recently. I think you are slowly converting me. In the past, I always thought that one could not knit neatly with bigger yarns. I’m happy to say that I was wrong. I’m going to look into that book!

    1. If it were not for chunky knits I don’t know that I would be knitting! The fast delivery was great for my confidence. I gradually moved to smaller needles but my heart belongs to #teamfatfibers.

As for the felting I have felted a hat by mistake! Hahahahahahahaaaa oh and my daughter felted my socks πŸ˜• so I love the felted pelts!
Thank you for reading, enjoy the rest of the weekend
