Orange anything makes me happy. This is not new information for anyone that has been around me for more than five minutes. Another thing that is not news is I have participated in two Knit Collage knit-a-longs. I adore Amy, the owner, but each time she was ask me to join along, I asked the same question. Do you have orange yarn? The answer was always the same, “I’m working on it GG!” Have you ever met Amy Small? I could never tell her no.
Fast forward to a few weeks ago and I received a picture of Serenity and my heart smiled. Why did I smile you ask? Well Duh it’s Orange! LOL!! One thing you may not know is I love texture and Serenity wins that category too. When Amy asked if I would like some of the yarn I screamed YES!
The Yarn
Serenity is described one the website as a machine made brushed boucle yarn. In Serenity, wool and nylon fibers are spun together to create a beautiful and subtle boucle texture. The brushed effect creates an irregular look and feel reminiscent of your favorite fleece jacket or a perfectly worn in sheep skin throw. For us, this yarn is all about embracing a little slice of inner peace and sanctuary. Oh and it’s orange! LOL
Serenity is 85% merino wool / 15% nylon and approximately 220 yards / 201m. If you are into gauge because I am a thug! LOL and you can get 3 to 6 inches per inch with a US 6 thru 10 needle size. They retail for $28.00 per skein.
When the yarn arrived I was so excited! I wanted to cast on something immediately, but you know I am not a fan of multiple WIPS. So I put it aside, besides I needed to find a pattern.
Orange Le Slouch Beret
I didn’t have to look far for a pattern, because Knit Collage offered a free pattern when they introduced Serenity to the world. The pattern is for a hat and scarf and can be found here. I made the hat and it takes just about a full skein. Amy was kind enough to send me three skeins. I think I am going to make a cowl or shawl to match the hat. I love how it came out!
The Pattern is easy to follow and is well written. I used US 8 and US 10 (up from what the pattern calls for) there is some cabling to work the brim but it’s not hard. The hat should have more slouch but I have PTSD from hats being too big, so I skipped a few repeats (hides face) look I was nervous. When I make another, because I will, I will follow the pattern repeats. LOL!
So if you like a textured yarn and a free pattern, I say check out Serenity. I approve this yarn and this pattern 🙂 Now I have nothing to work on, I didn’t prepare. I need to find something to cast on STAT! I have the yarn, just need to find something that inspires me.
Have a fabulous day on purpose
GG
I designed and knit a sweater in orange Serenity with Wildflower accents!
I used a size 11 needle and that worked fine. I think you could even go up to a 13, if you wanted a drapier fabric.
I’m not usually a hat girl, but I think the Serenity Slouch might not mess up my hair too much. And I have some leftover yarn… 🙂
Oooo that sweater is probably fab!
Congratulations on the hat! It looks lovely on you!
Thank you 🤗 I’m happy with it
You aren’t selfish, you are just honest and unapologetic. Knitting beautiful things for yourself is part of your joy in life, like a skylark ascending. Anything that makes your heart smile is artistically valid. Carry on!
Yes! Ty I will do that!
I wanted to comment on the selfish knitting post, but there’s no comment field so I’ll comment here. I’m a selfish knitter, but I do also knit for some people, very specific people. I’ll knit socks for my husband and youngest son as they both adore my handknit socks. I’ve just got halfway through gloves for my eldest, though if he loses these ones like he did the bought ones he’s off the knitworthy list completely. I’ve also knit for my mum who loves her shawl and for youngest’s teacher when she retired last year and provided her with care instructions. There’s also the odd thing for fundraising for the local guild. Generally though I knit for me. I know I appreciate the time and resources that go into a project, if it’s handspun it won’t leave the family. I gave mum some handspun when she looked after me following my last major surgery, she fell head over heels in love and she knit it at her craft group who also fell in love, I find it very hard to release my handspun though, couldn’t sell it. There’s a group on Ravelry for “Selfish” knitters, but we look on it as being selfish in the sense of looking after ourselves rather than the mean version. We help eachother be strong when accosted by the un-knitworthy and many of us have found that strength helpful in other situations as well.
Thank you I’ll fix that
