If you have been reading the blog for a bit, you will remember the first time I featured this talented lady and her wonderful crocheting. Well lets see what she is up to now, because these adorable dolls and keychains…well let me just get into it!

1.  How did My Pretty Brown Doll happen?
My Pretty Brown Doll happened quite unexpectedly.  I had a doll on my “never ending” to crochet list for quite some time; when I finally got around to it I thought it was quite interesting that none of the patterns I had found featured a brown doll. I decided to make my first doll brown for the simple fact that I am brown.  I didn’t know then exactly what I was getting myself into but due to the overwhelming positive response I made to choice to focus my crochet gift on making brown dolls and so My Pretty Brown Doll was born.

2. Do you still crochet cowls and scarves or is is all about the dolls now?
Yes! My first love is still crochet. I am honored that I get use my gift in such an impactful way with the dolls but there is still so much I want to learn and do with crochet. So yes I still am crocheting all things. I will be bringing back a few Don’t Get it Twisted Crochet favorites during the Fall and Winter months.
3.  AND I am so sure they will be a hit. Now let’s talk about my daughter Nia! LOL I love her btw, she is awesome! Now I remember reading that my Nia, was being discontinued. Is that true and if yes why?
The “Mia” Doll has definitely become the face of My Pretty Brown Doll and she was my absolute favorite doll to create in fact a lot of what I create is still based on her, but from a creative standpoint it was like the only thing I could do was make “Mia” so I had to retire her so I could focus on creating some other great dolls. The fantastic thing is that I did create a pattern for her which can be found out bit.ly/browndollpattern. There are so many wonderful crochet artist so now they can grab the pattern and make their very own “Mia” putting their own creative spin on her.

4. How awesome is that you are sharing the pattern! (click the picture to get the pattern).  I totally get why she was retired AND I am loving the fact that I have one! hahahahahahaha Can we talk about these dang on cute as ever keychains! OMGAWD these keychains! Please tell me about them. How did you come up with this super cuteness?
Oh my the keychains so here is the funny thing… they were never meant to be sold. I made the keychain as a cute way to show people what I do without actually carrying a doll around with me. It was suppose to be a conversation piece for my business. Due to the power of Instagram one picture has now grew into the “cutest keychain ever”. It is so popular that I have now even added a one puff option and plan to add a couple more hairstyles as well.

5. Look at there, what is meant to be will be. I love the one puff option too. Hmm I may have to place another order. LOL! What’s next for PBD?
What’s next. I am about to take the dolls to the next level. My focus has always been on the hair and creating natural hair inspired hairstyles with yarn, that is still the focus but incorporating some other doll techniques that I have learned and give these brown dolls even more personality. There is a full figured doll in the works as well as a mini doll. Last but not least I am planning a virtual course for crocheters who are new to amigurumi and want to make there first doll.
You know the natural hair is what got me. My Nia looks like she could be my child, the afro puffs are the cutest! That course sounds Amazeballs. Please let me know who know I may give it try, Nope I will just purchase from you! lol! Well Yolanda as always it has been my pleasure, thank you for taking the time to be in my spotlight, You Rock!

  1. Awesome blog post as always GG!
Thank you for spotlighting Yolanda Jordan and My Pretty Brown Doll!

  2. So the first thing I do on this Saturday morning is fall in love with those dolls! Thanks for this great interview, GG and Yolanda!

  3. I love your dolls. I to crochet, but, am having a hard time trying to come up with my own pattern. I see most of the dolls start out the same but, what do we have to do to make them our own?

    1. You are right Tonya a lot of the basics for the doll are the same. This is where you have to get creative with the basics. Do you have a different face design or maybe a cool outfit design. I recommend that you take your hook and yarn and without looking at any patterns just start crocheting. If you draw maybe sketch out a design or go with an image in your head and just keep crocheting until you bring that image to life.
