No yarn left behind….ever

Yarn, I love it all and have used and purchased it all. I woke up this morning at 7am..why I don’t know but went surfing on FB to see what I missed this week. Well I came across a post that bothered me and it was about cheap yarn and needles.  It was about folks that always post pictures expensive yarns and how those that can’t afford said yarns feel left out. I instantly thought of my fiber family and wondered if I ever made anyone feel like that? I am a lot of things but I would never intentionally make someone feel bad. I love social media, but there are times that I don’t.

When I share yarn with you all, at best, my goal is providing information and my excitement…because I am new to this world. I mean just like the yarn those women snatched off the table at the Voolenvine trunk show; I mean who knew? I didn’t, heck I grabbed it because they were. LOL I didn’t want to be left out. I am so sure there is so much yarn out there that I am not aware of, the only yarn I would never purchase or use is something that doesn’t feel good. Heck I had picked up very expensive yarn, that you couldn’t give to me, because it just felt rough and I don’t do rough. I like yarn that feels good in my hands and I have had that experience on either side of the price range.

When I come across new yarn I really feel like this; I just got my life!! Never once have I thought I am getting this yarn because it’s better than; the price tag doesn’t dictate my purchase; well, wait it does because I am a broke ass…but that is not what I am meaning to say. What I mean is I don’t feel superior or look down on yarn or needles for that matter. Heck I wish I had a full set of Signatures but I don’t and that doesn’t make my knitting any less lovely. I wish I had a stash full of cashmere, but I don’t…my stash is a melting pot of content and price points…and I love it all!  Why can’t we all just get along? Cheap vs Expensive, Picker vs Thrower, Crocheter vs Knitter, Black vs White…UGH it all annoys me. Rant over…I am going to find some yarn, any yarn, preferably orange. LOL

Knit on my fiber friends….knit on or crochet or quilt..hell whatever you do…enjoy

  1. Great post GG. I never got that feeling from you, but I have run across some yarn ” snobs”. I like you go by how the yarn feels and makes me feel if it get the happy feeling then welcome to my stash!

  2. Thank you. Fundamentally it is about the craft, the art, the work, and the joy of knitting and that can happen with all kinds of needles and yarn. I love using whatever feels good in my hands, and whatever suits the person and or occasion. One of my favorite yarns is an acrylic, but i also love Koigu and Malabrigo. Thanks for your posts. I always enjoy them.

  3. There are definitely some yarn snobs out there, for example those who cringe at the thought of using acrylic from big box stores. There are some people who are allergic to wool, cashmere and other natural materials. Why should they not be allowed to knit beautiful things? I have to tell you that my acrylic stash is just as big as my more expensive yarn stash. There is a time and place for it. Thanks for the great article!

  4. Right on, GG! For me it is pretty simple. Everyone has different tastes. Hallelujah! Otherwise, this would be a boring world to live in. “Cheap” yarn (more like affordable, to me) exists so that people, who don’t have a lot of extra money laying around, can be makers, just like all of us. Fiber lovers, just like us. And by us, I mean people who are passionate about yarn, knitting, spinning, dyeing and crochet. Anyone who feels they need to look down their nose at someone else’s choices should understand they are not inspiring anyone. Isn’t that the whole point of blogging about our projects? To share our fiber obsessed passion, inspire others and to be inspired.

  5. GG I’m all about orange…apricot in particular! It was my mom’s favourite colour & now it’s mine. She would have turned 90 last Tuesday, unfortunately she passed on at age 71. We still “talk” daily! So thanks for your orange mania! PS totally agree on your “rant”!

  6. My two cents: you absolutely are NOT a yarn snob. Your descriptions and travels to yarn shops have inspired me to continue to expand my knitting skills, which then inspires me to want to try the more exclusive yarns–but certainly not to ignore the less expensive ones!
My recent projects have been about trying to use up my stash of box store yarns, but only to make room (and lessen the guilt, lol!).
Maybe I’m entering a phase of wanting to make projects that will last a long time for the wearer, and in my mind that means using a more durable, thus more expensive, yarn.
But I’ll ALWAYS be drawn to beautiful acrylics and blends!

  7. You’re so not a yarn snob. I actually had a knitting teacher who writes books shame me because I knit a hat of her design with an acrylic. She complimented it at first when she saw it and asked me what yarn it was and then shamed me for acrylics. I use it all, why does it matter?!

  8. Aside from a certain shade of green (https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwjw2dqsgYngAhUJ5IMKHU53CsUQjRx6BAgBEAU&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.splashacrylic.com%2Fproduct%2Fchartreuse-acrylic-colour-sample%2F&psig=AOvVaw2156qwIEh9o-URpgAsIgEE&ust=1548508368374191) I like to think of myself as an all in yarn lover. I have projects that are merino, alpaca, and acrylic. I LOVE acrylic if it’s soft for using in throws and blankets just because it holds up so well to use. But that shade of green…I’m sure someone likes it.
