It’s more than a hat

Making a hat should be simple right? Ha! Can we talk about this hat I just finished and the lessons learned along the way? Can we? Ok let’s start with the details. Madelinetosh recently introduced a new base Wool + Cotton AND one of the color ways is GLO of course. Along with this new base is a collection of patterns. The pattern that jumped at me first was the Botanical Tee by Knitatude. I ordered the yarn so I could cast on this tee…then I spotted the Frankie Bucket *insert excited face*

If you are new around here you may not be familiar with GLO. Last year at Stitches West GG Loves Orange was launched on 6 bases if I remember correctly. The major thing here is that I get paid whenever GLO is purchased, so I was super happy they included GLO on the new base.

What you also may not know if you are new around here is that I learned to crochet first. That one time a summer camp. LOL! When I look at the fabulous things that are crocheted today, I question my skills. LOL! ANYWAY this hat designed by Toni Lipsey is crocheted and should be a breeze to make right? I mean it’s just a hat.

More than a Hat

Ha this project tested my resolve, you hear me. I grabbed the yarn, it’s beautiful btw. It is amazing how the color displays on this blend. I uploaded the pattern to my iPad and I got started. The pattern was easy to follow and I was rocking and rolling..until I wasn’t. You know that gut feeling we all have? Why don’t we respect it. LOL I kept thinking this is HUGE but kept on going. Yea that wasn’t such a good idea! hahahahahaha. Round 1 goes to the hat because I had to rip out.

The first lesson was one about gauge. Did I make a swatch? NO I did not! I mean I never do and my knitting is always dead on. So back to Michaels I went to get a smaller hook. (can I throw up now?) I should have because I went down a hook size and started over…guess what happen? LOL it was still too big!

The other lesson was patience. I had to stop being so hard on myself and figured out what I needed to do so the hat would fit. I needed help. Needing help in no way diminished my skills. Once I figured out the crown was too big for me (it’s one size) then it was smooth sailing. I wear the hat often and am so very happy I hung in there.

This hat will alway remind me that it’s ok to fall down…just don’t lay there

GG you are my heroine! I have been looking at that hat for a month, but there were no pictures of anyone wearing it. You look so good in it! And I’m glad to see someone actually wearing it. I was also thinking about the GLO colorway. I’m so glad you made that hat!
