5 reasons you should go to Rhinebeck

I woke up refreshed and I truly expected to have a fiber hangover. A hangover GG, were you drinking? NOPE, I sure wasn’t. But I was absolutely high off yarn! LOL! Yesterday, which was also I Love Yarn day, my daughter and I drove up to Rhinebeck, NY to attend the Sheep and Wool Festival.

I posted an album full of pictures on my FB page and you can see them here. It’s too many to put them all in this post , but I will share the shot of the Ravelry meet up, which was AMAZEBALLS!

This blog post is a result of a question that was asked of me in reference to Rhinebeck. The question was “why would I go there?” Thank God they couldn’t see the shocked face as I typed “Why not?” I left the word hell out because that wouldn’t have been nice and GG is nice! LOL! So let’s get with these reasons, you ready?

5 Reasons You Should Go to Rhinebeck

  1. Yarn – the most obvious in my opinion. There is so much yarn, all weights of yarn, all colors of yarn and pretty much every brand of yarn you have or have not heard of previously. If you had a company that you have been dying to try out, well now you have a chance to touch and feel and squeeze and sniff. WHAT? You don’t do all of that before you buy your yarn? Oh, that’s just me? 20151017_134551
  2. Sheep – I know I can NOT be the only one that spends hours with the sheep and all the other animals. THAT part warms my heart each and every time. They are so expressive and totally makes my day. I spend more time trying to get the perfect picture, bending down putting the camera between the railing of the gates. LOL! Yea GG loves the animals. 20151017_112223
  3. Fiber Friends – I will never, as long as I live, be able to make you understand the sheer joy I experience when I hear someone call my name. First off my name is Gaye, so it took a minute for me to even respond to GG, LOL it was always an afterthought, like wait they are talking to me. LOL! When I tell you I gave out so many hugs and took so many selfies. Folks trying to shake my hand. I am a hugger baby, so get ready, if you don’t want to be hugged don’t call my name! LOL! Then I finally met the Knitterz! This group of supper talented women made my day complete. 2015-10-17 12.41.50-2
  4. Ravelry meet up – I posted the picture above, but this meeting of the folks that you talk to virtually is nothing short of amazing! I missed it last year but I bet you I was all up in the front holding the sign for the group picture. LOL that’s me right above .com. The Ravelry staff is out handing out name tags and sharpie pens so you can write your name. Shelbey’s button said “GG’s Daughter” hahahahahahahahahahahna
  5. Fall Foliage – I have yet to see a person that went to Rhinebeck that didn’t take a picture of the trees and the leaves! ABSOLUTELY breathtaking. There is one tree that I call the Rhinebeck Tree, the colors are just Fantastic! Look at her in all her glory below:20151017_135545_LLS

BONUS Reason – the designers! Listen here, I posted this poncho on my Facebook page, it was published in the latest edition of Knitty and it called Caught in the Rigging by Kathleen Dames. Talk about inspiration, to see something you want to make up close and personal and worn by the Designer, is that not knitter’s heaven! Kathleen is also the sweetest person ever!! I walk up to her and she was all “hey GG!” mean while I am having a full on fan moment! LOL! She can be found on her website here

Hopefully this break down convinced you, if it didn’t go anyway! LOL!

  1. Ok. I am so green right now it’s starting to offset my red hair! There isn’t anything like that out here, or if there is, I haven’t seen it yet. By the beautiful foliage, it looks like you guys are full on into autumn, and it’s just catching up to us in NorCal. Looks like you had a great time and I swear that someday I will make it out there to meet all those wonderful shop owners and one of my favorite bloggers <3!

  2. I went to Rhinebeck four years ago and loved it. Unfortunately, I was staying with some non-fiber people and ended up being stuck with their agenda – so I did not get to spend the time I had hoped to. I will go back – sooner rather than later.
I am, however, going to SAFF again this year. It’s only an 8 hour drive for me (from Florida) and is not as expensive as Rhinebeck. The people there are pretty awesome, too, and I will get to see a lot of the same vendors. It’s a shame that the Ravelry people do not attend; SAFF has gotten large enough to take over the entire venue and has a lot of wonderful things going for it.
I would highly recommend that you try SAFF as another really great fiber festival!
