I made a scarf

I am a giver, so I made a scarf.

I appreciate those that give without intent, so I MADE a scarf.

I admire those who freely share their gifts with the world, so I made a scarf.

I had 1 and a half skeins of Martta The Merino from Tjockt, so I HAD to make a scarf.

I love fat fiber and big needles, so I made a scarf…quickly

I like bright colors in the dreary winter, so I made a scarf

I love seeing folks wearing my handmade accessories, so I made a scarf

I often just grab yarn and my needles and go, the end result almost always results in the following question…”what pattern is that?” and I normally answer I made it up. AND I also normally say, I have to do better at writing down what I did, and I never do. So today my fiber friends I am breaking a GG tradition. I am trailblazing here, LOL you ready? I don’t have a pattern, but I definitely have a recipe.

As I wrote the word recipe, it all became clear. This is all my grandmother’s fault. LOL! When it came to cooking she never used a recipe, she just made it up as she went along. I would ask “Moma, did you write that down?” and she would say “no baby it’s up here” pointing to her head. See I was raised not to write it down. For example, I am the only one who mastered her sweet potato pie recipe. I can still remember me cooking my first Thanksgiving dinner and her standing there showing me what  to do. I remember asking “how much milk Moma?” and she would answer “until it’s the right color” I would ask “how much is that Ma?” to which she would reply “enough” So yea, THAT is why I can’t provide a traditional pattern because Mary said…lol! Love you Moma,10425408_10204310097527059_1309465544384804742_n

GG’s Scarf Recipe

NOTE: this is a recipe not an exact pattern, so please keep that in mind. I used super bulky and the coordinating needle size. If you are not into the fat fiber life, depending on the yarn weight some things will have to change, like needle size and number of cast on stitches. Ok here is what I did, sorta kinda….LOL it’s her fault ^^^^

Materials

  • Yarn – I had 125 yards of Martta the Merino just laying around. Who does that?
  • Needles – I always have BIG A$$ needles laying around, I used us50 or 25mm
  • Notions – I have hundreds of tapestry needles, because I always lose them

Recipe

Cast on (use your favorite cast on technique here) the number of stitches to obtain the desired width. I know there is some formula out there, stitches per inch and blah blah blah. I started with 15 stitches. I then did the following:

R1 – k1 p1 (knit one, purl one)

R2 – p1 k1 (purl one, knit one)

Now is this seed stitch or moss stitch, I have no idea…but I like how it looks, okay. When I grow up and be a big girl blogger I will provide all those statistics and facts and such. Until then…this is all I got.

I continued in this pattern until I pretty much ran out of yarn, no I am lying I got sleepy and I wanted it done. So it was time to bind off. LOL! Did I measure it? NOPE because why? It was long enough! hahahahahaha! Don’t stone me, I said it was a recipe didn’t I..so here is where you jazz it up, you make it as long or as short as you please. I am a generous scarf lover, so I always go for wrap around space.

Once you have reached your desired length sew up your seams, using what ever technique you like. LOL don’t I sound like the woman from Coming to America? “Whatever you like” hahahahahaha now I have to watch that. Anyway, that’s it folks. I didn’t block because it looked great, I like to call it the “knit n go” technique LOL! This was a gift so once I get a picture of the owner wearing it I will share.

Knit on my fiber friends…knit on

  1. Love it and love your approach … I haven’t used big needles since I was a teenager oh so long ago .. the trend then was one larger needle paired with a smaller one.

  2. As much as I love yarn, crocheting and everything that goes with it, I have never (wanted or needed to) subscribed to any blog. So imagine me subscribing to GGmadeit’s KNITTERS blog!! Each post is captivating and is like getting a fresh, new surprise every day! I am loving the knit recipe and technique! I laughed all the way through it! Thanks for the daily dose of inspiration and wit! Now let me go dig up and dust off my knitting needles…..
    Crochet……I meant Knit on!!
